چکیده

PURPOSE Subject motion is a major source of image degradation for functional MRI (fMRI), especially when using multishot sequences like three-dimensional (3D EPI). We present a hybrid radial-Cartesian 3D EPI trajectory enabling motion correction in k-space for functional MRI. METHODS The EPI "blades" of the 3D hybrid radial-Cartesian EPI sequence, called TURBINE, are rotated about the phase-encoding axis to fill out a cylinder in 3D k-space. Angular blades are acquired over time using a golden-angle rotation increment, allowing reconstruction at flexible temporal resolution. The self-navigating properties of the sequence are used to determine motion parameters from a high temporal-resolution navigator time series. The motion is corrected in k-space as part of the image reconstruction, and evaluated for experiments with both cued and natural motion. RESULTS We demonstrate that the motion correction works robustly and that we can achieve substantial artifact reduction as well as improvement in temporal signal-to-noise ratio and fMRI activation in the presence of both severe and subtle motion. CONCLUSION We show the potential for hybrid radial-Cartesian 3D EPI to substantially reduce artifacts for application in fMRI, especially for subject groups with significant head motion. The motion correction approach does not prolong the scan, and no extra hardware is required. In-Plane Motion Correction in Reconstruction of non-Cartesian 3D-functional MRI

When patients move during an MRI examination, severe artifacts arise in the reconstructed image and motion correction is therefore often desired. An in-plane motion correction algorithm suitable for PRESTO-CAN, a new 3D functional MRI method where sampling of k-space is radial in kx-direction and kz-direction and Cartesian in ky-direction, was implemented in this thesis work. Rotation and trans...

Respiratory and cardiac self-gated free-breathing cardiac CINE imaging with multiecho 3D hybrid radial SSFP acquisition.

A respiratory and cardiac self-gated free-breathing three-dimensional cine steady-state free precession imaging method using multiecho hybrid radial sampling is presented. Cartesian mapping of the k-space center along the slice encoding direction provides intensity-weighted position information, from which both respiratory and cardiac motions are derived. With in plan radial sampling acquired a...

High-Resolution Functional MRI at 3 T: 3D/2D Echo-Planar Imaging with Optimized Physiological Noise Correction

High-resolution functional MRI (fMRI) offers unique possibilities for studying human functional neuroanatomy. Although high-resolution fMRI has proven its potential at 7 T, most fMRI studies are still performed at rather low spatial resolution at 3 T. We optimized and compared single-shot two-dimensional echo-planar imaging (EPI) and multishot three-dimensional EPI high-resolution fMRI protocol...

Contarst-enhanced whole-heart coronary MRA in 5 minutes using radial EPI

INTRODUCTION: Whole-heart coronary MRA is challenging due to the long data acquisition time on the order of 8-12 minutes. Interleaved EPI using Cartesian kspace sampling has been reported for reducing the scan time of whole-heart coronary MRA [1]; however, this method suffers from an increased sensitivity to motion artifacts [2]. The purpose of this work was to optimize a radial EPI [3] techniq...

Prior Knowledge for Improved Image Estimation from Raw MRI Data

In this paper is presented a method for the accurate estimation of the image boundary from incomplete raw MRI data. This is necessary for the phase correction and the image reconstruction from incomplete Cartesian or Radial scans using MR techniques and therefore for the reduction of MRI scan time. The exact estimation method comprises the binarization of the low resolution image, the fast sepa...
